On Sunday 24 March, 17 charity mascots will line up at the London Landmarks Half Marathon to take part in the first ever charity mascot race. Ranging from Guide Dog’s fluffy mascot ‘Hero’ to Wateraid’s TAP and toilet, each mile will be run by one or more of the mascots alongside 13,000 runners aiming to raise £6 million for charity.
The event will also see the first ever appearance of the race organiser’s brand new mascot, ‘ The Tommy’s Rainbow’. The Rainbow will run the first and last miles of the race, representation all of the rainbow babies* that Tommy’s has helped thousands of families to have since the charity’s beginning.
The inaugural London Landmarks Half Marathon in 2018 was hailed a resounding success with runners remarking on the buzzing atmosphere and amazing support. The introduction of the mascot relay hopes to add another element of fun to the event, which is much more than just a half marathon.
Race Director Lia Fyles said: “Charity is at the core of LLHM and we thought a charity mascot relay would be fun and also another great way to raise awareness of the charities we work closely with. LLHM is organised by Tommy’s but it will benefit 180 charities and raise millions of pounds for those good causes. We are excited to witness what we believe is the first ever charity mascot relay.”
The mascots tackling LLHM 2019 (in running order) are Rainbow (Tommy’s), Shoe Barker (Cancer Research UK), Bernard the Bear (GOSH), Bagpuss (Hospice of Hope), PoppyMan (Royal British Legion) Echo (Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY)), PCA Aware Bear (Pancreatic Cancer Action), Muggy (Macmillian), Ruby the Cat (RSPCA), Pantosaurus (NSPCC), Rufus (JDRF), Hero (Guide Dogs), TAP & Toilet (Wateraid), Hudson the Hound (Children’s Trust) and Mr Hearty (British Heart Foundation).
